Parasite Prevention: What You Should Know Routine treatments to prevent infestations of internal and external parasites are necessary for the long term health of your pet. Northeast Ohio harbors harmful infectious diseases such as Heartworm disease spread by mosquitoes, Lyme disease spread by ticks, and intestinal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms. Our routine diagnostic testing tells us our pets are being bitten by parasites such as ticks and these ticks are carrying these life threatening diseases Unfortunately due to mild winters experienced these past years, we have been seeing fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes year round. This creates a necessity of year round treatment with preventatives. In our area, we can no longer depend on parasites “dying” during winter months. We recommend prescription preventions that work systemically, or inside the body, as they are tested and have proven efficacy and safety measures versus preventions that work externally. We make sure to tailor our prevention recommendations for each pet’s needs. For puppies, we recommend Simparica Trio, this is an all-in-one flea, tick, and heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm prevention. For our canines at 6 months of age and older, we recommend the once monthly chewable Simparica to prevent fleas & ticks, and the injectable heartworm prevention ProHeart. For our felines, even those who live strictly indoors, we recommend revolution plus. This is a prescription topical that is absorbed systemically through the skin. This covers fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and ear mites. Click the links below to learn more about each medication! |
